Our trip to Hell's Backbone, Ecalante, Zion, Utah - 2006...

I've combined our photos from Hell's Backbone and the drive to Escalante. We drove the Hell's Backbone road for the full length but there really wasn't all that much to see and we didn't spend much time in Escalante so we don't have a lot of photos from either. I hope you enjoy what we do have to show, though, but please note that they are not necessarily in the order that we captured the scenes. The bridge... |
| I took pictures of dead trees whenever I came across one that I thought looked interesting. This one is pretty twisted and shows evidence of a tough life... |

Lots of flowers blooming along the road. This particular species made bright splashes of color wherever we found it... |
|
A view down the canyon from the middle of the Hell's Backbone bridge. Difficult to tell from the photo but take my word for it; it's a looong ways down.... |

The view in the other direction is just as rugged. If not more so... |
| We came across this marker, set in stone, that gave a bit of history about the road and bridge... |

Here's what it said... |
| More gorgeous flowers to brighten our day.... |

And, if those weren't pretty enough, here's some more.... |
| Here's another perspective on a big canyon... |

Just in case Death isn't coming soon enough for you, here's where you can access the upper part of it.... |
| Or, if you think life might be easier if you were a tree think again. Of course, it's not apt to blow away in a windstorm... |

More of Utah's beautiful flowers.... |
| As we came down out of the Hell's Backbone area we saw where the Forest Service was doing a controlled burn... |

The view while taking Highway 12 towards Escalante is almost too beautiful for words and certainly too big to capture in a photograph.... |
| As always, if that isn't enough, you just have to turn your head a bit to see something else.... |

Fortunately, there were lots of wide spots in the road so that gawkers like us could pull over and just gawk.... |
| More big damn rocks... |

The previous picture was taken from down thataway.... |
| These rocks reminded us of giant cow flops... |

This guy tried to save some time and money by towing a double trailer load of hay. Oops! Oh, well. If we have to be stuck somewhere for a while it might as well be here... |
| I suppose the view, while we're waiting, could be worse... |

We stopped in here but it was too late in the afternoon and too hot to do the hike and look at the petrified wood. Just another reason to come back... |
| We did see this quail in the shade under the campground sign... |

One last striking mountain on our way back to Bryce... |
| And a cute squirrel trying to avoid murderers with pellet guns... |
